Purgatory
When I dip
into the ardent waters of truth
my skin stings
reacting with sweat,
my soul is pierced
and comes up with furious struggle
not to be forced to learn
about myself at all.
My faults, my sins
I want to keep
buried where they lie
hidden for years
because I now fear
revolt and rebellion.
Staring into the steaming mirror
I detect
shadows on my eyebrow,
shadows on my mood,
shadows of guilt and remorse.
Who am I
I wonder
alien to myself,
a stranger, a villain?
Eventually giving in to the heat,
to the truth of brutal steaming life
sweating and cursing
I relax into the inevitable.
Slackening I loosen myself
to waves circling
around and through me
