Mystery – UNDER THE SPELL OF A GREAT LOVE /// 2. The Vacation

The place was small, romantic, and almost kitschily beautiful.
Sea, beach, music, restaurants, warm nights.
They danced.
They swam.
They spent hours lying in the sand.
And, of course, they made love.



On the last morning, Sarah only wanted to do a little shopping.
“I’ll be right back.”
Ralf kissed her.
“Promise?”
Sarah grinned.
“What could possibly happen?”
She left.
And never came back.



At first, Ralf wasn’t worried.
After an hour, he became restless.
After two hours, he went looking for her.
That evening, he went to the police.



The next day, a larger search operation was launched.
Hospitals.
Roads.
Train station.
Harbor.
Nothing.
Sarah had disappeared.
Without a farewell letter.
Without a message.
Without a trace.



Weeks passed.
Then months.
Ralf hardly wrote anymore.
And when he did put something down on paper, they weren’t stories.
They were memories.
Sarah on the beach.
Sarah laughing.
Sarah in bed.
Sarah at breakfast.
Sarah in the red dress.
Sarah with wet hair.
Sarah.
Sarah, over and over again.



And eventually, Ralf began to remember something strange.
On the last night before she disappeared, Sarah had said:
“If you ever can’t find me anymore, look for me where you saw me happiest.”
He no longer knew whether she had actually said that.
Or whether he had simply convinced himself later that she had.
