A year later, Ralf went back there.
He didn’t even know why.
Perhaps he finally wanted to say goodbye.
Perhaps some part of him still hoped for a miracle.
On the beach, he sat beneath the full moon and drank.
His binoculars lay beside him.
He watched the small pleasure boat out on the water.
People were dancing on the brightly illuminated upper deck.
Then Ralf froze.
A woman.
Long hair.
The way she carried herself.
Her height.
Her face.
He lowered the binoculars.
Looked through them again.
His heart began to race.
“Sarah ...?”
The woman turned.
Only for a moment.
Ralf jumped to his feet.
He ran to his car.
By the time the ship docked, he was already waiting at the quay.
People came ashore.
Couples.
Families.
Friends.
Then he saw her.
Sarah.
Or a woman who looked exactly like Sarah.
Ralf walked toward her.
“Sarah?”
The woman stepped back.
“Excuse me?”
“It’s you!”
“I don’t know you.”
Ralf reached for her arm.
“Sarah!”
A large man stepped between them.
“Leave my sister alone.”
“Your sister?”
The man struck him.
Ralf saw the sky.
Then nothing.
