John R. Cowan Sr.

Throwaways: He II

They found him in a dumpster in the early morning.
No one had noticed the small hand hanging lifeless under
The lid, cold and blue with one small drop of blood
Hanging from the middle finger.
No one saw how he got there. No one cared.
The night before, like every other night, he had wandered
The streets looking for a date and a meal.
He is the prey for the predators that share the streets.
It is not too hard for a pretty young boy to find a place for
The night.
The predators know just what their prey is looking for.
The trick is for the boy to find someone who will give him
A meal and a bed for the night and not hurt him too badly.
Last night, he guessed wrong.
