What's in a number?

Have you ever had one of those mornings, when you wake up and realize you can’t put off doing that job any longer, all the excuses have ran out?

Well the other morning I did just that.

It was a glorious day, the sun was shining and the birds were singing, it just felt good to be alive, so I thought I’ll get stuck in and sort out that bit of painting that needs doing. (My front door to be precise)

I don’t know why but I’ve always wanted a red front door.

My door is made of wood it has two glass panels that run from top to bottom with dingy flaking paintwork that has seen better days.

I changed into my old clothes and set about preparing my front door.

First I unscrewed the plastic house numbers before taking off the old white plastic letter box, making it easier to rub down and paint.

I wasted no time in washing down the shabby looking front door, before giving it a good sanding down leaving it ready for painting.

Later that morning I drove to my local D.I.Y store, not one of those huge industrial units where it takes an hour to find what you want, but a small family run shop at the other end of the village where I live.

On entering the shop I saw the shelves stacked with paint and chose a vivid poppy red colour. (Just what I was looking for)

Also while I was there I decided to buy myself a new brass letterbox and some new brass house numbers for the door, I found a new brass letterbox that I liked and put it on the counter with my tin of paint but couldn’t find any brass house numbers.

I said to the girl behind the counter “Do you stock brass house numbers”?

She said “Yes” and opened a draw and pulled out a box with assorted numbers in it, she said “What number did you want”? I said “42 please”.

She replied “I’m ever so sorry but they only go up to number 9”.
