Promise

Promise 
 
Remember the summer full of wind,
 remember the joy of spring
 when ploughed was the land and apple trees bloomed
and birds began to sing.
Remember fall with plenty of fruit,
with colours and golden wine,
 remember the nights with stars and the moon
when to friendship we built a shrine.
 
 
Long lasts the period of mourning and grief,
long winter times of dark,
when we in separation are held
 in a life, lonely and stark.
But – through winter cold and bitter blast
over snow and icebound lake
for moments a rosy sunbeam steals
that as a promise we take.
 
 
Again will open the blossoms to bloom,
again the world will be bright,
again the larks of summer return
and stars are twinkling at night.
Once more we’ll have a chance to meet
 under the gleaming sky.
Then we will smile with tender care
each in the other’s eye.
